Lake Ranfurly, Mildura

The MIRAGE PROJECT_[salt] is a site specific installation using stereoscopic slide photographs presented in such a way so as to create the spatial illusion of windows onto an invisible, parallel world. Several binocular style 3D slide viewers will be placed in specific positions on a salt lake, which comprise an identical spatial configuration to that from which the photographs were originally taken. Thus the installation opens a porthole to a displaced landscape. The idea is to convey the extraordinary experience, sense of wonder and discovery inspired by “getting up close” to an iceberg. This wonder will be re-enforced by the contrast of this Antarctic reality against the arid regional Australian environment. I aim to create a tangible sense of the scale and dimension of a real iceberg by opening the audience’s imagination and allowing them to “connect the dots”. MIRAGE PROJECT_[salt] is an adaptation ofMIRAGE PROJECT_[iceberg], shown in Federation Square, but [salt] inserts the same iceberg into the open space of a salt lake.
David will also be presenting a series of photographs taken on the salt lake in the Wallflower gallery. These are extended slides using an entire roll of medium format film for each image, exploring the celestial qualities of the light on the salt lake.
