Going Somewhere explores negotiations of place and personal identity through artistic intervention in the Australian landscape. This body of work is a series of site-specific performances and videos that consider both successful and flawed attempts to establish a sense of connection between the self and the surrounding environment.  The project draws on themes of artistic labour and productivity; the tragi-comic hero; the post-romantic landscape, and the fallible body. The work will be developed in response to a period of concentrated immersion in and bodily engagement with the Mildura landscape. I will conduct a series of experimental performances using everyday movements and simple props to explore Mildura’s unique natural environment, cultivated landscapes, socio-cultural history and future progress. Going Somewhere will transform the Mildura region into a training ground where the artist’s physical capabilities, connection to the landscape and dedication to the process of art making are interrogated and tested. Going Somewhere is part of an ongoing research project developed through field studies at Fowlers Gap Research Station, far west NSW, and studio experimentation at the College of Fine Arts (COFA), Sydney. The project forms part of my BFA Honours Research. In December 2013, I will continue developing the project at SĺM artist residency in Reykjavik, Iceland.
