the excess projects are a series of immersive installations the artist has been developing over two years that explore human excess in its many forms, particularly the excess of Western consumer culture.
This mixed media installation, the excess projects: wake in fright, deals with the excessive fear that pervades our society, and responds to the cultural undercurrents of insecurity, intolerance and violence presently surfacing in our society and playing out in the political arena; the troubling social conservatism that is currently manifesting in attitudes to refugees and a resurgence of xenophobia, the escalating global war on ‘terror’ and the politically-constructed fear resulting in excessive surveillance and a serious erosion of our civil liberties and rights to privacy.
Taking its name from the horror movie of the same title, wake in fright, the work is immersively challenging – both visually and aurally – providing multiple encounters that end with a bang.
