Lake Transversal is part of an ongoing series of works engaging with dry salt lakes in Australia. Standing at the centre of one of these lakes leaves me feeling directionless; each side of the lake is almost identical to the other. The hard crust of the salt seems to stretch out infinitely, creating a continuous horizon at the periphery. My work attempts to capture this visual phenomenon as well as the precarious nature of the salt environment within the lakes.
Lake Transversal is a drawing performance that will take place over the four days of the Mildura Palimpsest. Using a large roll of paper I will gradually make a frottage drawing across the surface of a dry salt lake. This project embodies the notion of ‘Palimpsest’ as a parchment inscribed with the traces of its environment, evoking the presence of the lake during its absence. My drawing will record the topology of the transitory surface of the lake, which fluctuates over time due to rainfall and marks left by people and animals. In this way the drawing is a method of recording and preserving the indexical traces held by the surface of the dry lake.
