In response to the Palimpsest, being a parchment which has been partly erased and reinscribed, the proposal is to recreate in-situ (Mildura township), what was formerly the world’s longest bar which was removed from the Mildura Working Man’s Club in 1995.
The project responds to the socio-cultural changes in Mildura prompting the bar’s removal and its former physical manifestation.   The work will be a demarcation of the spatial dimensions of the bar; this is not a replica but a temporal reinstatement using ad-hoc materials found within the Mildura township and region.
The bar will be functional for an event during Palimpsest, in conjunction with the hospitality industry in Mildura.  As part of the recreation of the bar, a series of event marketing materials will be circulated that form a suite of images which are intrinsic to the project beyond its mere function as advertising material.  These would include bar paraphernalia, such as coasters, labels, signage (banners) and staff uniforms.
With respect to location, the scale of the bar precipitates a requirement for it to be outdoors, which objectifies it as a play on Minimalist Sculpture and installation, referencing Richard Serra’s Tilted Arc. The work in its recreation and use of both functional and found objects and performance, operations and functional purpose allows for a space where a nuanced interplay can occur between the culture of entertainment, mateship, socialisation, and the sociometrics of the town and the language of contemporary art practice.
