A suburban McMansion (photo documented in the round from existing housing) printed onto jockey silk, with curtains blowing out from the windows in the breeze. A tent house (approx 3x3x3m) glowing in the landscape. By photographically documenting actual new builds and seamlessly collaging the imagery across individual builds, an entire new home is made. Each side of this house is a true depiction representing real choices in housing in Australia. From open windows, curtains billow out. Yet, the entire structure is just a skin, a surface of printed silk across a tent-like skeleton resting on the surface of the earth.
The spread of housing across the country has accelerated over the last ten years, new estates both on the edges of our cities and our country towns have imposed themselves over the landscape in a catalogue style pre-order menu which take few cues from the landscape. When residents allow the vernacular of the natural landscape to enter the discord is immense. It is this tension that interests me with this work. This home could be anyone's anywhere, but it is here and I think this site adds a certain complexity and brings local, cultural, and historic references into its positioning, as well as opens up discussion about what Australians want their lives to be, their aspirations and their identities.
