TINA KANE EMERGENT WRITERS AWARD

The Tina Kane Emergent Writer Award honors Tina Kane, who had been for twenty years—as a 2014 citation of her noted—‘a presence to rely on, engaging with writers, locals and visitors, making them feel welcome in the space she creates around herself, which is one of curiosity, intimacy and genuine good will.’

Tina was particularly welcoming to young and newly emergent writers, who often expressed their gratitude for her personal warmth and attention.  Hers is a tradition the Mildura Writers Festival intends to mark and continue with this annual award. The winners are:

2017 Natalie Harkin
2016 Emily Bitto

Recipient of the second Tina Kane Emergent Writers Award, Natalie Harkin.

I am pleased to present this award to Natalie Harkin for the courage of her treatment of difficult material in her writing.  It is no easy matter to speak forcefully and directly about Aboriginal issues, which are also human issues more generally.  But I would also like to acknowledge the lyrical gift that is apparent in those poems that take us into the heart of her experience, which motivates the poetry—and the polemic—because it reveals the emotional and lived experience of herself and her people.  It strikes a chord that resonates with the values Tina Kane exemplified in her life and in her creative work.
Paul Kane.
