Lynee KoskyMessage from the Minister for the Arts
The Victorian Government is proud to support the Mildura Wentworth Arts Festival.

With an ‘arts for all' ethos, the Festival brings a diverse array of arts and cultural experiences to the local community and attracts many visitors to the region.

This 2008 Festival is more accessible than ever with more free events across the visual and performing arts - from music to multimedia, sculpture to street performance.

The local community is very much at the heart of the Mildura Wentworth Arts Festival. This year the focus is on celebrating the people of this extraordinary part of Victoria.

Mildura is rich in home grown artistic talent, with a number of local artists now performing regularly on the national and international stage. This Festival is an opportunity to celebrate and enjoy local stars, such as Sally Hederics of Strange Fruit and composer, Kim Chalmers, back on their home turf.

It's also an opportunity for locals and visitors to discover some hidden treasures and amazing local stories: from the puppets of the late Ross Hill, one of Australia's foremost puppeteers; to local trailblazer, Pearl Wallace, whose name has been lent to the inaugural Pearl Award honouring a strong woman who has made a significant contribution to her community.

The Victorian Government is committed to providing all Victorians with opportunities to participate in the arts, wherever they live.

Festivals like this one provide an important way for communities to express their identity, connect with each other and make sense of the world around them.

This year's Mildura Wentworth Festival is a real celebration of the Mildura community - its people, places, past and present.

Enjoy!

Paul JohnsonMessage from the Vice Chancellor
and President of La Trobe University

La Trobe University is proud to contribute once again to bringing the Mildura Wentworth Arts Festival to life.

The Arts are vitally important to this university on a cultural level, on a community engagement level and at a teaching and learning level. La Trobe University is a great supporter of visual and performing arts in regional Victoria through our educational programs, research and the sponsorship of awards, events and exhibitions.

This year an honours year in the Bachelor of Visual Arts has been introduced to the School of Visual Arts and Design at La Trobe University, Mildura. We’re looking forward to graduating students of exceptional quality who will go on to successful careers and/or post graduate studies linking with future activities at the Festival.

As this year’s Festival focuses on the people of this unique part of Australia, I feel it’s fitting to highlight the significant personal achievements of our students. La Trobe graduate, Belinda Philp, is also the winner of the $15,000 Deadly Art Award at the 2007 Victorian Indigenous Art Awards. Belinda follows in the footsteps of Craig Charles, an indigenous artist and graduate of our first intake of Visual Arts students. Craig’s work now hangs in the Ian Potter Centre at the National Gallery of Victoria.

With programs such as ‘Walkabout down under’, where International students explore the Australian outback landscape through photography, and our central role in the Murray-Darling Palimpsest, La Trobe University, Mildura fosters artistic connections across Australia and around the globe.

I wish the people of Mildura and the region every success with this year’s exciting and diverse program of culture and arts.

Professor Paul Johnson
Vice-Chancellor and President of La Trobe University
